Saturday saw the maximum temperature soaring to 34.9 degrees Celsius, slightly up from 34.2 degrees Celsius on Friday. According to the IMD, the rising trend in the mercury level is likely to continue for the next four days. On Saturday, the minimum temperature rose to 26.3 degrees Celsius from 26 degrees Celsius on Friday.
Between June 1 and August 26, the city received 402.2mm of rainfall as compared to the normal 384.9mm, having a surplus of 4%. August which is usually the wettest month of the year saw only 69.2mm of rainfall this year.
The IMD has attributed the lack of precipitation to the shifting of monsoon trough to the foothills of the Himalayas. “The monsoon trough remained north of its normal position bringing rains over the northern parts of the country. Light showers at isolated places may occur due to local factors but no widespread rainfall is expected over the next few days,” the IMD official said.
For Sunday, it will be partly cloudy with maximum and minimum temperatures expected to hover around 26 and 36 degrees Celsius, respectively.
The city’s air quality deteriorated but remained in the moderate category. The overall reading was 162 as compared 124 on the previous day.
Meanwhile, the capital is also likely to see a slight rise in the maximum temperature on Sunday. The weather department expects the heat to rise over the week.
